MONEY
The national Russian monetary unit
is rouble (RUR). One rouble is worth 100 kopecks. At present time, coins of
1, 5, 10, 50 kopecks, and 1, 2, 5 roubles and notes of 5, 10, 50, 100, 500
roubles, as per 1997 model, are in circulation.
In Russia, payment for all goods and
services is to be made in the national currency, or by credit cards.
BANKS
45 banks currently operate in
St.Petersburg, including two foreign ones, providing the wide range of
banking services. Most of the banks are open to clients from 9.00 to 13.00.
Currency exchange offices are usually open from 10.00 to 20.00. There are
the currency exchange centers where many currency nominations are accepted.
Currency exchange transactions with private persons are out of law. Large
hotels provide 24-hours banking services. Money is exchanged only upon
presentation of a passport. As of 24.08.2002, the exchange rate is Euro 1 =
RUR 30.5748, USD 1 = RUR 31.5725.

long-distance and international calls can be made by using credit cards
issued by the above companies as well as Visa, Master Card, Amex, Diner's
Club. The "St.Petersburg pay phones" may be identified by their green booths.

bought at Metro stations, news-stands and departments of the Sberbank of
Russia. The price of one card varies from RUR 42.00 to 561.00 depending on

TOURIST SERVICES
City administration keeps the
policy to form the St.Petersburg image as a worldwide-recognized center for
tourism and culture, and favours the tourist activity. Preparations on the
celebration of the tercentenary to the city assist improving the business
and investment climate. The program Tourism Development in St.Petersburg
for 2002-2005 has been accepted and is now in progress. The main positions
of the program:
- Forming a positive image of
St.Petersburg at the national and global tourist markets
- Creating a comfortable information
environment for the inhabitants and guests of the city
- Developing the tourism indistry
- Developing the statistics
- Developing maritime and aquatic
tourism in St.Petersburg
To implement these purposes, RUR 120
mio from the municipal budget are assigned for 2002-2005.
The tourist business in the city is
steadily developing. There are about 100,000 employees in tourist industry.
St.Petersburg hotel complex includes

Multifunctional holiday resort
complex of St.Petersburg comprises 74 enterprises (PAX over 16,000).
For recent years, the annual number
of visitors coming to our region tends to stabilize. During 2001, over 2,7
million tourists visited the city. Within the 1st half of 2002, 1.2 mio of
foreign tourists arrived to St.Petersburg. 484 calls of river cruise ships
with 298,000 passengers on board, half of them being foreigners, and 212
calls of foreign sea cruise ships have taken place. Along with the increase
of the accommodation places, the growth of incoming tourism in St.Petersburg
is planned, especially in light of city-s tercentenary to celebrate.
It is expected that the number of
arrivals to St.Petersburg will reach 5 mio in 2005.
At present, there are over 800
licensed travel agencies and tour operators dealing in St.Petersburg. The
following agencies are recognized as Official Tour Operators at
St.Petersburg City Administration: Arktur Travel, City, Cosmos Limited,
DIUIM Travel Company, Hotel Saint Petersburg, Intouravtoservice, ITUS-Tour,
Neva Travel Company, Nika, St.Petersburg Council for Tourism, World Travel
Company. In 2002, 2 foreign companies ? General Tours (USA) and Olympia
Reisen (Germany) ? being partners of Russian companies, have been accredited
as the Official Tour Operators at St.Petersburg City Administration.
St.Petersburg is receiving the
tourists with short-term (72 hours) visa. Endorsed by Foreign Affairs
Ministry of Russian Federation, 9 local travel companies (Comintour, Cosmos
Limited, DIUIM Travel Company Firm, Fremad Russia St.Petersburg, Neva Travel
Company, Nika, Nordic Travel, Russkie Prostori, Taleon Club) and 3 hotels (Grand
Hotel Europe, Corinthia Nevskij Palace, Pulkovskaya) are authorized for
dealing with short-time stay visitors. Visa issuing in the airport Pulkovo
is arranged by City Tourist Information Center.
The LXIX session of the Executive
Council of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) was held on October 3
and 4. Over 100,000 delegates were participating, including 28 ministers on
tourism from different countries. A great interest in the city and a high
level of the session-s organization is registered. It has been admitted that
St.Petersburg is a city favourable for tourists. Russia was unanimously
elected as Chairman of the WTO Executive Council in 2003, which will help
Russia to more actively defend its interests at the global tourist market.
