It is the old Russian fortress, located on one of the islands at the place
where the Neva River emerges from the lake Ladoga; it contains a whole
complex of archaelogical, architectural and historical monuments, belonging
to various periods of Russian history, from the XIV century till the days of
the heroic defence of Leningrad during the Second World War. For over 200
years, the fortress was employed as a state prison.
