The city is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Finland at the eastern end of the Baltic Sea. It is here that the Neva river forms the estuary and islands of its delta on the 60th parallel of the Northern latitude before entering the Baltic. St. Petersburg is the largest metropolis in the world situated so far north.
